Collected from a region that was once occupied by the Byzantine Roman military as they fought against the challengers of the Christian Roman Empire, these objects were utilized by Roman soldiers responsible for the protection of Byzantium. The river served as a natural barrier against attacks from the north. In the Balkans, Roman camps and fortresses along the Danube were constantly being challenged by opposing tribes and armies. This region was the northern-most boundary of the Roman Empire for most of its duration and evolution into Byzantium right up until 1336 AD when the area fell under Ottoman rule. These authentic iron artifacts were made for and used by the Byzantine Roman armies defending the Empire's northern border along the Danube River in the present day East Balkans. Loss of the cavalry was a sure defeat as the ground troops of the Byzantine Roman army by this era, were ill-equipped and inferior to the invader armies. Protection and support of the cavalry was vital to victory. The cavalry was the most powerful and important weapon of the Byzantine Roman army as opposed to the ground forces of the earlier Roman Empire. This is the first time in 33 years of our work that we have ever had ancient iron horseshoes from this period! We are currently listing numerous items that came from an old German private collection comprising many of these ancient Roman Byzantine cavalry artifacts and this set of 2 horseshoes were all of the unmounted ancient horseshoes in that rare collection. You can see they are flat in shape and perfect, meaning they were made but never mounted to a horse hoof. The site was located in the Danube River Valley of Eastern Europe, a former frontier for both, the Classic Roman Empire and the Byzantine Roman Empire. This is a RARE set of TWO unusedancient iron horseshoes and FOUR associated iron nails, that were originally found with numerous other military horse gear on a site that was a former ancient Roman Byzantine cavalry camp.
